EcoPreneur Panel @ Hawaii Pacific University

Davide Giardini | November 9, 2009 in Events | Comments (0)

This past Wednesday, November 4, the 1st HPU’s EcoPreneur Panel took place at the Warmer Auditorium on Fort Street Mall, Honolulu (HI).

The five panelists invited are among the top brightest so-called eco-entrepreneurs in Hawaii.

Each one of them shared with the audience their experiences, adventures, and a few tips which has lead to the establishment of their respective green businesses.

Now, you might ask, “what in the world is an ecopreneur and what does he do?”.

An ecopreneur is an entrepreneur who conducts his business in such a way that not only it is environmentally-friendlier than competitors, but it also benefits (directly or indirectly) the environment. The use of term environment in the definition has a loose significance; an ecopreneurial activity can range from providing alternative ecologically-friendly goods (i.e.: renewable energies and products), to offering green consultancy  services (i.e.: energy audits, carbon offsets, cost-efficient solutions). Bottom line is: an ecopreneur successfully develops his/her profitable company or venture around the globally growing concern for our fragile environment and its depletable resources, while leading by example in environmental awareness.

The five ecopreneurs feautured at this 1st EcoPreneur panel at HPU were:

350 Honolulu Rally

Davide Giardini | November 2, 2009 in Events | Comments (0)

As the UN Climate Change Convention to be held in Copenhagen on December 7-18, 2009 approaches, the majority of the scientific world agrees that 350 pppm is the maximum allowable CO2 concentration that the atmosphere can take before major changes occur.
350.org worldwide initiative strives for global leaders to keep this in mind, as they will be setting tangible and appropriate actions to tackle climate change at the Copenhagen Conference.
On Saturday October 24, 2009 the 350 rally took place at the State Capitol in Honolulu.

More than 200 people attended the 350 Honolulu rally, organized by Keith Rose, forming a large human in front of the State Capitol Building.  Keynote speaker was State Senator Gary Hooser, who addressed the importance of these actions and climate change from a political perspective.

On that same day throughout the world, thousands of similar rallies were held, in order to raise awareness of climate change.

Green Market Report

Davide Giardini | October 29, 2009 in Events | Comments (0)

Last Wednesday, October 21, the third event of the state-wide GREEN MARKET took place on Fort Street Mall, in downtown Honolulu.
The GREEN MARKET is an educational and community event focusing on sharing information, ideas and products that will create a more sustainable and greener island community.
Strong from the previous edition on Earth Day (April 22) earlier this year - which attracted over 10,000 visitors and 50 booths - vendors gathered to showcase the latests in Hawaii’s green goods, services, and initiatives.
At a time when we are all more conscious about our expenditures and sustainability is viewed as an unaffordable pricey commodity, the green businesses showcased at the GREEN MARKET reminded us that sustainability is marketable.
The presence of the SAH and its members was strong. Among these:
HAGADONE PRINTING, the largest printing company in Hawaii, was on stage presenting its revolutionary green-printing techniques and programs.
STYROPHOBIA featured their biocompostable products made of renewable sources as a sustainable competitive alternative to plastics.
The HONU GUIDE folks featured their valuable guide to Hawaii green businesses and green living at 50% discount price. Included in the 2009 Honu Guide are $3,500 worth of coupons for food, services, health, sport, and travel.
Hawaii Pacific University’s GREEN CLUB unveiled their latest projects and initiatives, such as the Creating Sustainability Fundraiser ($1,500), paper recycling at the University, and the creation of an organic GMO-free garden on the Windward Hawai’i Loa Campus. A good collection of SHAKLEE’s sustainable line of products was also featured.
HAWAII CONSERVATION ALLIANCE booth presented valuable information on the alliance efforts in the preservation of native ecosystems, with fun games and prices.
Scott Saville was on hand representing TR3EES, a fast-growing consulting firm specialized in designing and organizing sustainable zero-waste events, and in helping businesses slash costs by reducing their operations’ environmental impacts.
These were only few of the SAH members who actively participated in the GREEN MARKET on Wednesday October 21.
Many more though were the companies and organizations that showcased their products and services at the event.
We encourage these to join the SAH, to be part of the collective efforts of a network of local business and individuals with the vision of a sustainable future in mind. The SAH is a powerful resource to help your business stand out from the crowd, while implementing solutions to conserve and protect resources for a sustainable Hawai’i.
